On May 18, 2021, Deputy Brown, along with Deputy Roger Graham and other units responded to Ridge Rd. in reference to a suicidal subject with a gun. Deputy Brown arrived on scene first and made contact with the subject, who was sitting on his patio with a handgun in his lap. The subject did not threaten to shoot anyone, however, he stated that he was determined to end his own life that day. Deputy Brown and Deputy Graham engaged the subject in conversation. At times, the subject responded amicably to the interaction. However, during the course of the call, there were several moments where the subject put the gun to his chest and had his thumb on the trigger. All involved held their composure and were able to talk the subject down. Deputy Graham contributed to bringing the subject back from the brink by relating personal life experiences - some that would have been difficult for anyone to share. The subject began to feel comfortable and relaxed. An opportunity presented itself for less-lethal force to be used, and after deputies deployed Tasers, the subject was detained and later transported to AUMC. Deputy Graham treated the subject with respect and dignity, as well as showed empathy for the pain he was suffering. This helped to contribute to the peaceful resolution of this situation.
Deputy Brown is a credit to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of Augusta Richmond County.
