Deputy Zachary Lewis,
On November 20, 2016, Deputy Levi McMurtry and Deputy Zachary Lewis were investigating an unrelated incident at the Riverfront Marina when they were alerted to a vehicle that had driven into the Savannah River via a boat ramp. Arriving at the scene, they observed a vehicle submerged in water and a male subject struggling to stay above water. The subject attempted to avoid being pulled from the water by the deputies. Deputy McMurtry and Deputy Lewis made their way to a dock and as the subject was swimming pass, Deputy Lewis held Deputy McMurtry by his duty belt allowing him to reach out and grab the subject pulling him to safety. During the investigation it, was discovered that the subject in question had assaulted his girlfriend the night before and was attempting to take his own life believing that he had killed her. The vehicle the subject was driving had also been stolen by the subject the night before from a gas station on East Boundary.
